CAA Approves Temporary TMZs for Belfast Aldergrove
The establishment of temporary Transponder Mandatory Zones in the vicinity of Belfast Aldergrove Airport has been approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and will take effect on 22 April 2010.  This follows an application for their establishment from the airport’s ATC provider, NATS Services Ltd.
Belfast Aldergrove’s primary surveillance radar will be temporarily withdrawn from service on 22 April as part of the airport’s radar replacement programme, with primary radar data being unavailable for approximately four months whilst the work is undertaken.  The TMZs encompass the Belfast Control Zone (CTR) and Terminal Control Area (TMA), and will serve to maintain current levels of safety in the local area while radar services are provided using Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) data-only.
Aircraft wishing to operate within the TMZ are required to carry and operate secondary surveillance radar equipment or to have established two-way radio communications with ATC.  The airspace classifications of both the CTR and TMA will remain unchanged.
Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC)
Details of the Belfast Aldergrove TMZs are contained in AIC M 013/2010 and replicated in AIP Supplement 011/2010, both of which will be published on 22 April 2010 and will be available at: www.ais.org.uk
Due to the possibility of unforeseen changes to programme timescales, airspace users are reminded of the need to check NOTAMs for the latest information regarding any changes to the TMZ’s effective dates.
A map depicting the TMZs is attached.

CAA launches new Airspace for Tomorrow Publication

CAA has launched a new publication  that sets out in broad terms, how we intend to develop the UK’s future airspace arrangements in cooperation with the Department for Transport, Ministry of Defence, NATS and other aviation stakeholders.
This document is intended to give a summary of:
  • How UK airspace is used and controlled today.
  • The key factors that the CAA thinks will cause our airspace arrangements to evolve.
  • The CAA’s vision for the future airspace arrangements in 2030 – some of the concepts that will be considered to achieve the vision and the associated benefits.
  • The purpose and direction for the Future Airspace Strategy (FAS) that is being developed.
The development of the Strategy is a complex process that will take place over the next two to three years, with a formal consultation due to begin in 2010. It will then underpin the CAA’s work in airspace terms out to 2030 and beyond, including the relevant application of environmental targets set by the Government for 2050.
